How
the airport system works these days
Go to the e-ticketing - The self service machines that are
appearing all over airport lobbies are the key to cutting your time
in line. What is more, an increasing number of airlines are allowing
customers to transfer e-tickets, as well as the paper versions,
to other carriers.
Pack in clear plastic - Putting as many small items as possible
in clear plastic storage bags will make the inspection process much
easier if your suitcase gets singled out.
Check with your airline and the Transportation Security Administration
(TSA) in advance for a list of forbidden items - The TSA (toll-free,
866-289-9673; www.tsa.dot.gov).
Find out the average waiting time for check in and security
at your airport - Many airlines, now feature what they call "real
time" updates on their Web sites, which give estimated delays
at security. If you are leaving at a popular time, add an extra
15 minutes just to be on the safe side.
Passenger
Rights
If you are chosen to undergo a pat-down search, you are entitled
to have it done out of view of the general public and can request
a screener of the same gender.
You can ask that film be examined by hand rather then by
an X-ray machine.
Passengers who take injectable medications can carry syringes
as long as they are professionally labeled.
Passengers with pacemakers can request a pat-down inspection
instead of walking through the metal detector.
If you do not want to go through the metal detector for any
reason, you can request a pat-down inspection.
If you feel you are mistreated at a security checkpoint,
never make a scene. Politely ask to see a supervisor and if you
don't get satisfaction and resolve the matter at the airport, call
TSA (866-289-9673).
